Power shortages cause problems for plants in China

A serious electric power shortage caused by the scorching summer in China's coastal cities, including Shanghai, is adversely affecting the operations of foreign manufacturers, including Japanese plants, in the region.

Shanghai authorities predicted a power shortage in May, but a foreign firm operating in China said that it suddenly received notice that power supplies would be suspended the following day.

As a result, many firms have had to cut their planned production.
