I just finished the book, Road to Emancipation, 1860 to 1864
and did not know that Lincoln had to be brought into Washington by train through cover of darkness prior to his inaugaration because of so much asassination talk. That the ex-President left NO monies in the treasury to pay any one including Congress. That the country had no idea on where Lincoln stood on the slavery platform, originally against it, and that most of his cabinet was made up of individuals that also sought the Republican nomination in 1860. I was amazed at the fact that Washington D.C had no paved roads, the Washington monument unfinished was an "EYE SORE" and every 3rd door in town was a house of prostitution. Apple doesn't fall to far from the tree does it?
