They supported the war in large part to get our troops off their soil.

Aha! But the Saudis DIDN'T support the war. As a matter of fact, they did everything they could to sabotage support for the war in the Gulf, to the point of bullying Qatar and Bahrain in attempt to dissuade them from cooperating. Why? Because they were quite content to have Saddam in a box, and they saw the writing on the wall. They feared the US setting up a liberal democracy next door, and the US free of the Saudi bases and oil leash. When we were no longer dependent on them, they knew we would be free to pressure them to deal with the extremists in the Kingdom. And that they no doubt fear the most.

Kuwaitis were quite happy at the prospect of Saddam being deposed. You probably didn't read those articles.

Saddam remained a regional threat. Containment was breaking down. If Saddam could have gotten out of his box, which was not an impossibility by any measure, he would have had immense prestige in the Arab world. And he could have reconstituted his weapons programs right where he left off, prepaid with French and Russian oil contracts, and likely our "allies" in the Gulf would never trust us or stick their necks out for us again. Most especially the Kuwaitis, I'm sure. Even last year, Uday was still talking about Kuwait as the 13th Iraqi province in the Iraqi parliament.
