OK, But who is gonna check? When people move to Washington, is there some border guard that demands a marriage certificate? If Sydney and Leslie move into Washington and Sydney applies for a credit card from Nordstrom's claiming to be married, is anyone going to check? And if they do check, is anyone gonna call the cops to file a complaint that they're living in sin? My point is, so what? If they file their state taxes jointly, will anyone have any reason to question it? No one would have a clue they weren't married according to Washington law until and unless they were audited and an agent showed up at their door.

You haven't answered either of my questions. One is how would the lack of recognition of their marriage come to the attention of the authorities? The other is of what consequence would it be if they were "united" rather than "married?"

What I'm going for here is, practically speaking, what all the hullabaloo is all about. I understand that many people are offended by the prospect of gay marriage. Let's set that aside and talk about the practical implications, how it might play out in everyday life. I would think that a couple could claim marriage and stay well under the radar.
