08-11-03 0754ET DJ New Brunswick Scientific -2: Backlog Up By $600,000 In 2Q

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--New Brunswick Scientific Co. (NBSC) said Monday it swung to a loss in the second quarter, compared with earnings in the year-ago period, citing the continuing weakness in the market for life science equipment.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, New Brunswick Scientific reported a net loss of $1.2 million, or 14 cents a share, for the quarter ended June 28, compared with net income of $846,000, or 10 cents a share, for the year-ago period.

Second-quarter net sales declined to $10.7 million from $16.1 million a year earlier, reflecting lower sales volumes in all product lines, the Edison, N.J., company said.

New Brunswick Scientific said its backlog of unfilled orders increased to $6.1 million at June 28 from $5.5 million at the end of the first quarter, primarily because of increased orders for the new sterilizable-in-place fermentors.

New Brunswick Scientific's 2003 second-quarter results include a charge of $ 100,000 related to a 9% work force reduction implemented during the period, according to the filing.
