The internet was in use as a minor source of usenet groups, text email, and file ftp operations outside of the universities and defense contractors. In the early 1990s a student coop came to IBM Austin. He brought the CERN protocols for hypertext and I was involved in the project to convert internal documentation to this format. The student, Marc Andreesen, produced a robust viewer for these protocols which he called Mosaic, and which was later sold under the name Netscape. It was only then that I saw the shift away from the proprietary networks like Compuserve and Prodogy. Had there not been the public infrastucture in place by that time, it is likely that there would still be a collage of connections as numerous as the long distance companies.
