I smell an agenda behind civil unions that will begin attacking civil institutions in communities that are family oriented.

Seems to me that the homosexuals who want to get married are the suburban sorts, the family-oriented sorts. I would not expect an attack of the type you describe during my lifetime or yours, either. Where this could lead further down the road is another matter. Seems to me that the aging population would have more influence of the type that concerns you than homosexuals. Old people are more numerous and becoming much, much more numerous, and often geographically isolated from the younger generations of their families. I don't think your concern is unreasonable of misplaced, merely unlikely to have much influence.
