"Well, you said Saddam brought stability to the region and you favor stability"

The ME is prone to instability. The reason we helped keep Saddam in power pre-91 was stability against Islamic government in general and Iranian-style government in particular. The Iranians have a bad habit of thinking the oil in the ground is theirs to sell or not to sell as they se fit -- that is unacceptable to us. We certainly don't want that kind of thinking to spread throughout the region. We continue to help to keep other "monarchs" in power in the region for the same reason we kept Saddam in power -- oil.

US foreign policy has two objectives in the ME: (1) Keep the oil flowing, and (2) Israeli security. Unfortunately our policies have led to a byproduct that we are now paying for dearly -- widespread terrorism -- and now we have to fight a war on terrorism to ensure Israeli security and oil supply security. Saddam figured he could get away with playing his own games -- wrong. But when we step in and act by invading Iraq, we have done the very thing that benefits the terrorists most. We have created an even more fertile ground for terrorism directed at the US.
