what about my new investment research task... I am looking for software companies that are classifying media files (movies and music) with a "tagging" mechanism like html. This would be inside the body of the file. If we had a way to tag media content, we could automate delivery, configure product placement, and enable TV portals (the google for media).

You would go to your tivo box and say "arnold swarzenegger NYC helicopter", and it would pull up True Lies. Then because you logged in from Europe and downloaded the file, the product placements in the movie copy would replace American Coke with whatever their local softdrink is.

Basically the google for TV is the opportunity.

My guess is some startups here are working on this. Don't know who. Maybe somebody in india is working on it too. But the US company has an edge in that they can go to hollywood and get the new movies released in the format they decide on. This company grows and hires workers, sells a bunch and wealth is created. Then the workers in the startup go off and create new companies and so on. Thats the way it was in the early 90s with oracle and yahoo anyway.

The alternative scenario is that this startup company gets funding from intel. The CTO and CEO of this startup do the design and negotiation with the film industry. Then, intel says "we want you to use some of our indian programmers because they are 1/3 the cost"... and these guys come over here and see what this startup company is doing and go back home and code away. The company still prospers but the only people who win are the very few people at the very top at intel and the startup, these guys become HUGELY rich vs. scenario 1 where some of the company needs to be distributed to US workers. Then the codebase is owned by india and not the US.
