Monday: IU releases defs 1 thru 14 Tuesday: IU releases defs 15 thru 23 Wednesday: IU releases defs 24 thru 56 ---> and LU releases defs 1 thru 56 Thursday: IU releases defs 57 thru 63 Friday: IU releases defs 64 thru 84 Saturday: no releases Sunday: no releases Monday: IU releases defs 85 thru 102 Tuesday: IU releases defs 103 thru 140 Wednesday: IU releases defs 141 thru 163 ---> and LU releases defs 57 thru 163 so, in the above example, if you check for defs using LU exclusively, then on Thursday (when 57 thru 63 are actually available via IU), LU will tell you that you have the most current defs. BUT YOU DON'T. you only have 1 thru 56. and so it goes... if you check for defs with LU on Friday (when 64 thru 84 are available via IU), LU will tell you that you have the most current defs. BUT YOU DON'T. you only have 1 thru 56. this will happen all week until, after checking on Tuesday (when 103 thru 140 are available via IU, but LU tells you that you are current with 1 thru 56), LU finally releases 57 thru 163. if you're seeing this, then you'll understand why i say that scanning every day doesn't mean much unless you are retrieving your virus definitions via IU. as the above example attempts to demonstrate, LU defs are out of date every day except Wednesday... EVEN THOUGH LiveUpdate WILL TELL YOU THAT YOUR DEFS ARE CURRENT! here is the symantec list of definitions added to see it another way... securityresponse.symantec.com hth
