I guess you have info I dont have. I have been told we DONT intend to stay any longer than necessary but we DO INTEND to make sure they have a decent government BY THE PEOPLE and FOR THE PEOPLE and OF THE PEOPLE. To insure that the coalition must stay to make sure some strongman doesnt take over before the people have a chance to set up their own protections. I would think their government might be more like Turkey's then what you ascribe too.
As to the conflict itself, while any loss of American lives is regretful this in NO WAY even begins to compare to Vietnam. IMHO the mistake that was made was to not have sufficient troops/engineers/other infrastructure people available to secure the safety and implement the infrastructure needs as soon as the last shot was fired. I understand WHY Rummy did as he did, he was trying to placate members of Congress regarding THE COST but sometimes you JUST GOTTA BITE THE BULLET and do it right. He had plenty of intelligence that indicated HE would be right and of course to a large degree he was but it doesnt take many dissidents to create HAVOC when you have an inadequate police force. I hope that they can train Iraqi's rapidly to take over. jdn
