I'm looking forward to Pete Hamill's forthcoming biography of Boss Tweed. I think he'll be portrayed as a somewhat sympathetic figure, due in large part to his protection of Catholics from the Know-Nothings. He was open about his graft, something the new breed of urbane politicos could not tolerate. The Thomas Nast cartoons about him were not helpful, an example of images manipulating public opinion long before the age of TV....
