I think you are putting to much freight on the word "accomplishment". Obviously, no one can accomplish much twenty- four/seven. We all need down time, and some periods are inherently more productive than others. But first, the important stuff is frequently in the details, not the big dramatic gestures: I am, I hope, a good husband and father every day, even if it is just because I am there to give a hug or advice, make sure that everyone is on schedule, or make everyone giggle with my jokes.
Second, one is mainly energized by goals, even if it is only the goal of getting good ice cream. Yes, there are serendipitous events that provide satisfaction, like a beautiful morning or a kiss on the forehead from one's spouse. But that is not per se what gets me up and running, otherwise I might sit contentedly at the window and watch as the morning progresses. It is the need to run errands, or finish a piece, or to argue on SI, or improve my French, or to think through some philosophical subject, that is really energizing.
Third, even sitting relatively passively while watching a movie or a television show is often goal oriented, insofar as one is searching for a certain level of aesthetic satisfaction, or is in search of restorative down time, or is sharing a nice time with one's family......... |
