There was a big practical difference. We never needed Saddam's help. During WW2 a good case could be made that Britain needed Russias help. And btw I seem to recall that hitler invaded Russia and so in a real sense they fought Hitler independent of us. That is very different giving weapons to a 2 bit ruthless dictator when there was no need to.
