I, also, have an antipathy to the phrase. I thought about why, and decided it was because of the very great possibility of misinterpretation and misuse. People who hear those phrases without understanding the particular meanings that the authors intended by their unusual uses of common words.

Much like those students interpret Aristotle's stress on happiness as justifying going out and drinking and wenching every night. "But I'm following Aristotle's advice to pursue happiness," they'll say. Or, the more modern ones might say "But I'm following Campbell's dictate to generate bliss in my life." In both cases they vastly abuse the concepts that Aristotle and Campbell intended, but the common usage of the words provides cover for them.
