Something needs to be done for sure. I'm not sure who wrote the paper a fairly well respected oil guy believes we will run out by 2050 or so. His point is that most of the big deposits have been found and that new finds don't keep pace with consumption projections based on population growth. As less developed countries grow their consumption per person increases also.

Even if the supply were unlimited I don't the the earth will support fossil fuel use forever. Global warming and all that. If we burnt even part of the hydrates in the ocean some believe that it could cause climate change. Once again the problem is too many people who consume too much stuff.
