We are committed to Israel. Our occupation of Iraq and broader designs on the ME could be reversed. Israel is something else. ME peace has eluded one President after another. Israel deserves some, but not all, of the blame. There are times when Bush appears ready to take a slightly tougher line with Israel in the interests of securing peace, but then he backs down. Our policies have moved closer to Israeli policies under Bush -- the power of the gun. It has not brought peace to Israel and it will not bring peace to us.
