I'm a not very familiar with historical economic trends, but I know that the economy is a volatile thing. We suffered a lot in the 70s during Carter's term, but honestly, as I posted to Lizzy Tudor the other day.....I don't hold the president completely responsible for the economy regardless of whether it's good or bad.
