It was your buddies, the Nazis, who poisoned the well.
In 1941, the Jewish population peaked at 150,000. By then, the era of tolerance was over. A pro-Nazi government came to power and enacted statutes based on Germany's Nuremberg Laws. Jews were stripped of political and economic power. Mob violence and looting followed. A 1941 pogrom here left 200 Jews dead and 2,000 more injured. Most of the Jewish property in the city was destroyed. In 1948, when Israel was created, Iraqi Jews joined 900,000 Jews fleeing Arab nations. In 1951, Israel airlifted 125,000 Jews out of Iraq. Most settled in Israel. Nearly all the remaining 6,000 Jews left after 1969, after the Baath Party publicly hanged 11 Jews on trumped-up spy charges.
