When a president is seen as besieged and entangled in controversy, he really can't get very much done.

That's the key to democracy.

It's harder for Democrats to demand answers and easier for administration officials to dismiss their charges as political posturing. And Bush faces less of the daily barrage that prompted President Clinton to set up a parallel press operation for investigative inquiries and made Clinton's White House seem at times like an embattled enclave.

Not since the early years of Lyndon Johnson's tenure has a president had more breathing room.

That's the key to tyranny by the all-powerful central gov't, run by an executive branch autocracy with far too much control over all aspects of national life, political, economic, judicial.

This is a bad precedent for future presidential administrations.

Personally, I'm much more comfortable with the kind of scandals and investigative atmosphere we saw last time, even if the issues prove at times to be stupid and trivial.

The Founding Fathers wanted conflict in governance, NOT what this article terms "when a president commands the central institutions of American politics and has few institutional checks, he can range more widely and hover above the fray."

Combine that with destroying contemporaneous historical records, issuing edicts that there shall be no note-taking, no emails, and you have the perfect environment for a wide range of actions to be made secret that greatly affect Americans.
