The veto holding members of the Security are all major powers with governments that we recognize as legitimate -- including China and Russia.

GST, that's absurd. The Security Council reflects the powers as of 1950, and even then France and Britain were given votes as former great powers and allies, not current great powers. We recognize the rest of Europe as legitimate too, not to mention India, Turkey and Japan, countries who certainly deserve a permanent seat more than France. They're not on the Security Council.

They are not out to thwart the US for the sake of opposing our interests

Um, true I guess. They're out to thwart the US for the sake of enhancing their own interests. France had a few oil contracts to protect, and high hopes of making itself a great leader in EUland. Comes down to much the same thing in action, however.

They were right. Libya is dictating nothing to us

About now, we would like to show Saddam's mass graves as evidence to the UN HR committee. But we won't, because Libya controls what that committee pays attention to.
