Hence the hiking of taxes on the "rich." The best way to increase taxes with a minimal effect on the polls.

What should he have done? The "compassionate conservative" thing like tax the poor more instead? The man balanced the budget, some of that money came from tax hikes and the rich got richer anyway. And he did it irregardless of the polls.
