Ted,

I think Arnold is a libertarian, rather than a liberal. I think the political philosophy is at least 2 diminsional, whith one dimension being socialist vs. free market, the other being personal freedoms / responsibilities / respect for traditions, and government role in these.

The US liberals are socialist in economic matters (heavy government hand) and hands off, anything goes in personal matters.

Libertarians are hands off in both areas, so there is a difference. The opposite of libertarians would be fascist, who, like liberals, are socialist in economic terms, but on the personal matters they were conservatives.

Something like this:

Libertarians
|
|
Conservatives -------+----------- Socialists (liberals)
(Most Reps) | (Most Dems)
|
Fascists
