S.Asia replaces China as mobile growth leader
Bangalore, Aug.13. (UNI): China will not be a growth market for mobile telephone subscribers over the next five years while the other South Asian nations will account for the most radical uptake of the technology for the foreseeable future, a report has said.
"It is rather remarkable that the fastest numerically growing country, China, is trailing Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East in Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)," noted In-Stat/MDR analyst Ken Hyers.
While China was numerically the most significant growth market for mobile services, it would lag significantly behind others in terms of CAGR over the next few years, said the report in Telecom.com.
Southern Asia and Southeast Asia had been pinpointed as the new percentage growth leaders while, as expected, Western Europe and Scandinavia would bring up the rear, he added.
The report said In-Stat/MDR estimated that there would be more than 931 million new subscribers signed over the next five years and that by 2007, there would be a total worldwide wireless population of over 2 billion users.
To reach this, In-Stat/MDR anticipated that the annual subscriber growth would average over 186 million over the period.
While newly developing regions would continue to bolster growth figures, Western Europe's growth would virtually stop over the next five years.
By 2007, penetration in the region would top 83.6 per cent, it said.
