China paper chides Japan over yuan criticism
Reuters, 08.13.03, 3:59 AM ET

BEIJING, Aug 13 (Reuters) - China, on the defensive for months over its fixed currency policy, switched tactics on Wednesday with a call for Japan to stop blaming others for its economic woes.

A rare economic commentary in the Communist Party mouthpiece People's Daily said Japanese politicians and economists were trying to shift dissatisfaction over their own economy by fanning fears over growing Chinese imports.

"A small number of people, including a few government officials, are not devoting themselves to domestic economic reforms and reflecting on the past failures of economic policies, instead shifting the blame to China's exports," it said.

Japan, along with the United States, has pressured China in recent months to revalue its yuan currency, saying its peg to the weakening U.S. dollar gives Chinese goods an unfair edge in world markets.
