Gartner Upgrades Global PC Shipments Forecast; Remains Cautious Long-Term
Thursday August 14, 9:51 am ET

STAMFORD, Conn. -(Dow Jones)- Gartner Inc. raised its forecast for third- quarter personal computer shipments after the second quarter outperformed expectations.
However, the technology advisory concern said it remains cautious in its outlook for the PC market, as economic conditions keep a significant recovery in business PC spending by year end in question.

In a press release Thursday, the company said it now sees worldwide PC shipments reaching 39.8 million units in the third quarter, up 9.6% from a year earlier.

For the year, Gartner sees PC shipments of 161.3 million units, an 8.9% increase from 2002.

Company representatives weren't immediately available to provide the previous third-quarter forecast.

In July, Gartner reported worldwide PC shipments rose 10% in the second quarter.

Separately, Gartner said worldwide service-provider router revenue rose 6% to $455.4 million in the second quarter, marking the first quarter of growth in the SPR market since declines began a year ago.

Cisco Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:CSCO - News) continued to lead the worldwide SPR market in the second quarter, claiming 54.6% of revenue and 52.9% of shipments, while Juniper Networks Inc. (NasdaqNM:JNPR - News) held second place with 29.9% of revenue and 30.1% of shipments.

Gartner attributed the revenue Cisco and Juniper gained from North American and European service providers during the quarter indicates recovery as the ISPs build out their backbone networks. Gartner defines service-provider routers as carrier-class routers capable of providing multigigabit bandwidth to support high-speed wide-area network interfaces.
