This 1.4Ghz CPU sounds unbeleivable, and I doubt that it will happen,
but then in 1980, a 100Mhz CPU sounded just as unbeleivable, so it
just might be possible. But then how many circuits will be on this
chip. I think that maybe Intel and HP just might be jumping the gun
a little. Putting more an more transistors on one chip will only work
up to a point. I don't claim to know where that point is, but some
time it might be more efficient to go with multiprocessing. Not just
4 or 8 CPU's, but thousands. Someone not too long ago posted the web
site of some university talking about putting a tiny cheap CPU on
each memory chip and then making them run programs to process and
move data around while CPU just copied programs and data from the
disk to the memory so that these programs could process them. Imagin
having one cheap $10 CPU for each 16k of memory. Then you put 16 of
those on each chip for 256k and 16 CPUs. Then you make it so that
and external CPU can acess all that memory as normal ram today. Then
you get 64Megs of this stuff in one machine. That would give you 4096
CPU's. If each one is 1/10th the power of a 100Mhz Pentium, then
you will have 400 times the power of a 100Mhz Pentium, or maybe the
power of a 40Ghz pentium. Dreamland or reality? I beleive that
parallel processing is the future. Each part of the computer processes
its own data, and the CPU coordinates the whole thing. Most of the
programs out there are just copying memory around all the time
anyways. So, check out "Comutational RAM"

Maybe this is what AMD should be working on as Intel and HP
work on their 1.4Ghz Pentium Super Pro.
