I presume, here, you're talking about the portion of the quote which reads 'is not the equal of the US.'. ( WRT Germany and France. )

If you think Germany, or France, or Germany and France combined are the equal of the US I'd suggest you look up the statistics.

The Louisina purchase had about as much land area as Germany, France, and Spain combined - IIRC. While land area doesn't equal equality I'd say the Louisina Purchase states are, today, better off than equal areas of France and Germany.

And less 'Tin-Pot'.
