The California ‘student council blue light special’ election

newsandopinion.com | I'm calling it "student council," because this is apparently just turning into a popularity contest, having little to do with any of the pressing issues facing the state. And "blue light special," because apparently, where your name is on the menu of candidates has a huge impact on how you fair, on how many orders you get. How pathetic that apparently being near the top of the ballot adds about five percent to your vote tally. And there's the ACLU suing for fear people will be too dumb to understand the ballots.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has become the front-runner based on the tough guy characters he plays in the movies. So, in a state where people are preparing to recall their governor because the economy is so horrible, everyone seems to be gearing up for an election where the issues don't matter. I don't mean to be preachy. Politics often is a popularity contest, but you would think this one in particular should be based on issues.

I don't live in California, so I don't care who wins. But if you're going to vote for "Differ'nt Strokes" star Gary Coleman or a porn star Marcy Carey, think about the California economy as you're casting that vote. I'm hoping we can all give the California voters more credit than that.

Remember, that sometimes they're only offering the blue light special because they have too much turkey in the house.
