I'm watching C-SPAN's Washington Journal and a caller made a terrific comparison.

What is happening in New York is several orders of magnitude more benign than what is happening in Iraq. The electricity outages in Iraq are part of a campaign of genocide and utter destruction of a culture.

Things aren't quite that bad in NYC, yet. The more applicable comparison is to the miserable state that the grid in California fell into due to ridiculous de-regulation/crime enabling schemes.

What we have in the affected areas at the moment is lots of finger pointing. No one admitting to a fault on their segment of a massively band-aided and babelized system. Gov. Bill Richardson, who served as Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration summed it up last night. We are a superpower with a third world electrical grid. The solution that FERC is pushing, more massive RTOs, will only exacerbate this condition.

It is time to push out the brats in the White House who are in favor of policies that will only make the system less reliable and more prone to getting gamed by the power marketers.
