That 15% was during the bull market !!...
Stuff a lot of people don't realize...
1 Most brokers will try to steer a new trader into mutual funds..
Not so much for the fees..but they know FUNDs do better
than most traders..
2 While few funds beat the S&P they have a lot of advantage
over the retail trader..
A: Funds have buying power, not every thing they buy is
open market, they often get discounts when buying and
can make buys the where the retail market don't see the
price.
B: Back when IPOs were making big bucks, & retail traders
couldn't get shares..the Funds got them.
C: Funds often get inside information ( indirectly ) but it's
useful..
------
If Most Funds didn't have an advantage over the retail trader
they would be in bad shape as there are more funds in the market than
issues.

The alternative is to get into a tracking issue..

The QQQ has more action but it's not for newbees or Buy and Hold types
the trouble with buy and hold types is not their intentions, however personal
problems can and often do force a sale at wrong time..
Divorce being #1 on the list..
