I'd like to see a return from the money taxed from me to SS equal to what I'd have gotten in free market investments.

WOULDN'T WE ALL!!!!

The reality is that (a) it was "invested" at a tiny fraction of the earning rate, and (b) if we did that, how would we fund the benefits for all those people who are getting FAR MORE than the appreciated value they've paid in?

The mistake we call "Social Security" was ill-conceived from the outset. The program was NEVER actuarily sound, and anyone who looked at it objectively knew it would eventually crash which is what is happening right now.

I had hoped Bush would deal with it but clearly the Democrats have chosen not to allow it. The only hope is that he will deal with it in the second term when he can't be hurt by the politics of it.
