Tom,
Re: That's an interesting statement by David Corn. I am assuming this is a different person than David Korn.
Yes. That would seem to be the case. You had me confused for a moment, but the oilempire article is quite specific.
David Corn writes for the Nation. David Korn worked for the State Department.
Two different individuals.

Re: So, according to this guy, Kennedy was making headway on withdrawal from SE Asia. On the contrary, Kennedy escalated the war in SE Asia. He didn't start it, of course. But he escalated the conflict, in response to the worsening conditions, just as Johnson did, just as Nixon did. Furthermore, the idea that Kennedy "electrified" debate over Vietnam is laughable.
Another case of poorly written text and a misunderstanding on your part. The oilempire writer is obviously referring to the 1968 Presidential campaign of Robert Kennedy who was vocally anti-war and gaining a lot of momentum before he was cut down. And to Teddy Kennedy who was also vocally anti-war during the Johnson Administration's tenure.
Remember, for those of us who were manning the barricades and getting tear gassed and pepper gassed on a regular basis back then, the 1960's didn't actually begin until the Summer of Love in 1967. <g> The era before that was still part of the Age of Conformity (except for the civil rights folks and the Beatles, of course.)
If I am to fault the writer, it is for a minor lack of specificity. Then again, he's not on cross in a civil court, so I'm cutting him some slack. :) |
