Tom,

Re: Based on this and the rest of the web page, it seems to me that he believes that JFK was trying to withdraw from SE Asia.

This is my understanding as well. JFK was assassinated because he was becoming an impediment to the military-industrial complex which was P.O.ed about not being allowed to take the gloves of in Cuba. The M-I-C was getting resistance from the White House on certain favorite budget items. They also wanted to escalate the Viet Nam situation from one where we had advisors to the corrupt Diem regime who were being withheld from the actual fighting to a live war status. Kennedy, Bundy and others were either ambivalent or opposed. McNamara and the Joint Chiefs were gung ho. Johnson proved to much more malleable inasmuch as his whole existence was based on political calculation rather than moral principles.

To say that LBJ campaigned in 1964 as a "dove" would be correct. It would also be correct to say that this was an utter lie, inasmuch as Johnson had fomented the phony Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in August of 1964, months before the election. And the plans to escalate the war for a victory prior to the 1968 elections was Johnson's scheme for a second term. Vietnamese intransigence was Johnson's downfall.
