christine - there was an article in the birmingham news two sundays ago by a woman who had moved south to get away from race difficulties in the north. she is white and has a bi-racial daughter. unfortunately, the birmingham news is not on-line. it says a lot about the current situation in both the north and south from one persons experience. from my own experience, i don't feel that race relations are the burning issue that many folks make it out to be. imo, forty years ago there were extremists on the white side, now we have them on both sides of us. having lived in texas the first ten years of my life, then california, and having spent summers here in alabama, i haven't found that things were any better in california. and from what i've heard and read, things aren't any better around the rest of the country. maybe different. the way different 'classes' relate to each other is very evident in my area and i think this spills over into the relations between races. this might be part of what you're friends were picking up on. i don't know if this answers your question at all, but maybe it's a start.(g) a 1970 mercedes! maybe i'll start thinking about a '67 chevelle... have you driven it up the coast yet? jp
