The interesting thing about the oil and energy companies is the majority of them are publicly owned. So what would be the motivation to commit every criminal and morally reprehensible act in the book for the benefit of shareholders? My guess is most of these companies have been systematically gutted, with shareholders feeling all warm and fuzzy about owning an empty shell.

Look at the debt to equity on most of these companies. If they were making anything close to the kind of money they report, they wouldn't have to float a new series of bonds every six months.
