"Muslim women, like women in all societies, had covered their head with a variety of gears over the centuries. These had such names as lachak, chador, rusari, rubandeh, chaqchur, maqne'a and picheh, among others."
"Muslim women could easily check the fraudulent nature of the neo-Islamist hijab .... headgear now marketed as an absolute "must" of Islam."
In the "free world" they do and there is wide and differing opinions about the "choice" to wear hijab or not. Most "choose" not to wear it in America, exept to go to the Mosque or something. Some choose to wear it because they are convinced that it is a religious requirement, others choose to wear it because they feel it protects them from the lustful eyes of strange men. But it is a choice and that is an important consideration.
"This fake Islamic hijab is nothing but a political prop, a weapon of visual terrorism. It is the symbol of a totalitarian ideology inspired more by Nazism and Communism than by Islam. "
Surely, the site of any Middle Eastern look might strike fear into the hearts of white supremicists but we ought'nt cater to that.
"It is as symbolic of Islam as the Mao uniform was of Chinese civilization."
This is an interesting argument for governments demanding that you dress a certain way against your wishes. It seems backward. In most cases it is just a choice for moderation and humility, in some it is also a physical presentation meant to convey extremism...but...have you been to Haight/Ashbury lately? We don't outlaw extreme expression there even to the point of surgical changes in gender and physical body mutation with carvings and tatoos and such. We feed the street people, provide shelter and comfort...because they have the right to choose how they present themselves in America and we are a caring people. |
