Ray:
The concept of deterrence is based on resolve and might. Potential enemies are held at bay by fear of both the might (ability) and resolve (determination) of the US. Potential allies are heartened by their friendship with us, and our ability to lend them aid against the evils of the world.

It is an unfortunate fact that many people in the world, especially those that rise to power, do not have the goodwill of mankind at heart. We cannot maintain our freedom and security with good words and deeds alone; we still need the big stick to back it up.

Since WWII, the world has feared our might and resolve. However, they have also, for the most part, viewed us as 'the good guys'. That combination of ability and benevolence has been a potent combination.

We still have all the might, but our judgement is slipping, IMO. A good number of people now view us as the bad guys, based on our recent 'colonialism'. I hope that these people differentiate America the country from Bush the administration. When Bush leaves office, we can start to repair our damaged reputation.
