It doesn't get much better than FREE!!

freetrade.com

First 20 trades are free, 21-100 only $3 and goes down from there. The only downside I see is a $5000 minimum to open the account. The other downside is this appears to be an "experiment" for Ameritrade with this new division. They don't advertise it to reduce cost so if it doesn't grow by word of mouth, it may not stay in existence. For me, at this time, I am keeping other accounts as backups but I'm going to give Freetrade a whirl. I have an Ameritrade Plus account at $20 a trade and the functionality and appearance of how Freetrade will work looks very similar.

Another one that I am going to try is LowTrades.Com; they are only $5 per trade with no minimum for cash accounts and a $2000 minimum for margin accounts. I understand their customer service leaves a little to be desired but I have heard they have improved greatly recently. I don't really care for their website appearance and set up but who can complain at $5 a trade? This is going to be one of my back ups for Freetrade till I see if Freetrade survives and works ok. Freetrade is run by Success Trade Securities. I don't know much about them but Success Trade's web page says they are $6 a trade. I don't know what they offer the LowTrades doesn't but I do know that if you open a LowTrades account right now, they give you free Level II for two months which you download from the Success site. I haven't funded my LowTrades account yet but I can say that my telephone conversations with their support team got me the answers I wanted but appeared a bit amateurish. Their email support was timely and ok but sometimes required a second email for verification. Again, so long as they do the trades successfully for $5, I'm not expecting much. We'll see how it goes when I fund.
