The problem is some in that list don't see women as human beings and I just can't get over that.

As the father of a couple of daughters I tend to agree, but I think the problem goes deeper. I know of no competitive society in the modern world that represses the creative energies of half their population. Not surprising, it is one of the "Seven Factors" identified by Ralph Peters

The Seven Factors

These key "failure factors" are:

Restrictions on the free flow of information.
The subjugation of women.
Inability to accept responsibility for individual or collective failure.
The extended family or clan as the basic unit of social organization.
Domination by a restrictive religion.
A low valuation of education.
Low prestige assigned to work.
