re: Japan strong economic indicators
Julius, that'S what I'm reading too - 3 surprise quartals of expansion. Seems that biz, gov and consumers in Japan are so pessimistic that they lost a sense of realism in their gloom & doom visions..

On the micro level, I saw some "pension scheme" adjustments in Japan (as in the US during the early 80ies) which ate into profits from 1996 to 2003. Many company I was watching or investing into had some extraordinary charges for changes in how pensions are accounted for (from a contribution basis to a capitalization basis showing the pension liability in the balance sheet).

The problem with Japan was that this was undertaken in a time of extraordinary tight manoevring room, further adding to the bearish stance of the 1990ies.. I guess this was one of the reasons, together with the Asian Financial Crisis which prolongued the domestic recession a couple of times and lasted in a depression so severe..

However times are changing anew and the many corporate survivors in Japan are now meaner and leaner and could really shine over the next couple of years.. Plus add the fact that Asia and America (NorthAm and LatAM) are the epicenters of growth in the world economy these days and are poised to stay this at least for the decade..

Could well be that Japan shifts not only into "recovery mode" but into a TURBO BOOST. It'S about time anyway..
