"1. I seem to have recovered from msblast.worm. i sucessfully removed it from process and deleted it from the registry. i first installed the patch from msft, and re-installed zone alarm. 2. I tried running the symantec removal tool. It stopped halfway through on several tries. i stopped using it."
did you use anything in its place to remove the worm, another removal tool from another vendor, or are you saying you followed instructions for manual removal?
"4. I think there will be some really ugly computer activity on August 16th, with attack on msft update site. the worm may have planted activity that will still spawn even after the worm was removed."
never materialized and that's to microsoft's credit, imo
"5. Symantec has received tremendous attention."
usually no matter what AV a user runs, they turn to symantec for removal assist, especially people using free AVs like AVG. big daddy norton is always there when people need him the most.
"thanks all for the help on the worm issue, especially mr mark"
i enjoy helping and *hate* seeing infected computers
"this has been a frightening issue and, i fear, the precursor of more to come"
this sounds like your first infection. i think it's fair to say that you learned a lot about firewalls and security updates.
rest assured that as virus activity increases, the AVs and ATs and FWs will all keep pace, and i suspect the user community, through threads like CL and many of the other security forums, will become a more informed group. |
