She wanted to be a good daughter- that is why the familial expectations meant something to her. She wouldn't have to pay any attention to them, unless she wanted to- and she obviously wanted to. I think, perhaps, she overstates her anxiety about fulfilling her parent's desires for her, in order to write an interesting article. Her parents are obviously not very strict, so she could do what she wants without a lot of abuse (not the case in all families).

If she had wanted to experiment, she could have. If she doesn't want to get married she doesn't have to. All of us live with great choices before us- but not all of us have choices that are cultural in origin, and not all of us can write them up in ways that interest other people. That's the only difference between her and us.
