well, i think i got it. i went into symantec's help screen, and got to one of their support pages. i went into my computer/manage/services and applications/services -then checked for my norton anti-virus auto protect status. while it was on automatic, i still then opened NAV and reclicked automatic. then i shut everything down. on reboot, nav auto protect was enabled. so i am happy. larry
