I liked the Laz Long books, too. Read them all. Of course, I was 14-17 at the time :-)

Don't even touch Banks with a nine foot pole. If I read a book I like, I read everything he has written. Banks is the only notable exception to date. I don't know if you read The Reality Dysfunction series of Peter Hamilton (another MAJOR waste of time), but I didn't even give up on those, read all three books (a thousand pages or so each) in disgust. Banks is really a special case.

Try Dan Simmons, starting with his Hyperion. I am pretty sure you will like it, judging by the couple of exchanges we have had.
