one author who I have read everything he has written is Jonathan Carroll. It isn't SF and it isn't quite fantasy, it is more fiction with a fantastic quality. Recommend starting with "Bones of the Moon" or "Outside the Dog Museum". Several of his books have intertwined characters, but are not interdependent.
