The fifties and early sixties were very conservative times. Liberal exceptions existed, as always, like the music the youth preferred, new cloths styles, and literature. It was only when extremists took oppressive stands declaring particular looks or activities to be intolerable that a huge wave of liberalism was fertilized. History is starting to repeat itself. By 2008 maybe we will see genuine political movement from the left, and the country will probably be ready for it by then.
