80 mpg that is 80 miles per U.S. gal.. That is what the car will do at about 55 miles per hour. No wind, and a fairly level road. That is the criteria for the highway testing. At 75 miles per hour I managed a trip from Sarnia Point Edward to Sherbrooke Quebec drove around and toured the Bombardier Ski Doo factory and returned a distance of over 1200 miles. Average consumption was 62 miles per gallon.

To see just how high a mileage I could get I drove the car very early in the morning (so I wouldn't tie up traffic and annoy anyone) at about 44 miles per hour. On this trip of 25 miles out 25 miles back I did average 104 mpg. and those are U.S. gallons. I did not stop, I did not have to brake for anyone. I put the car on cruise control. Which I had to pay extra for, a very worthwhile energy saving option.

Is it real world driving? Absolutely not! To simply jump in the Insight and go out for a pack of gum then hurry back home, I am lucky to get 50 mpg. There is a lot of energy wasted just warming up the engine. Constantly accelerating and decelerating plays havoc with gas mileage. Keeping up with the whims of other drivers eats energy. Even when the car is at cruising speed it takes about twenty seconds to get the process evened out so that optimum gas mileage is achieved.

Is 104 mpg a reality. Absolutely, and I'll bet you a tank of gas on it. Now with the newer lighter, higher storage batteries a new record is surely possible. <ggg>

The car is different from the Prius in that when it is out of gas with a fully charged battery the car won't move another inch, unless you are on a hill, or you push it. ( I brought a spare gascan for this test. )
