Thanks Professor Niman,
As I understand it viruses are naked DNA/RNA. Not having a surrounding cell they are less protected from mutagenic agents and hence mutate easily and rapidly. In the consequent struggle for survival are not the fittest those who don't kill the patients, but merely cause a (contagious) cold? If they tend to kill the patients isolation of the patient interferes with the ability of the killer virus to spread. The person with a mere cold is not subjected to the same isolation so the virus can spread and multiply. Since I live in Toronto I am of course longing to be correct on the above and that's not a good scientific attitude. What do you think about this point?
