"Tarting our kids up like JonBenet Ramsey is, OTOH, not safe." Mainstream society sexualizes kids through the media, long before they form an actual sexual persona. Ramsey is one example of significant adults taking it a step further, child porn is another mile down that road. Education programs designed to make everyone comfortable and excepting of a "particular" sexuality is pretty much in that same boat.
